Any opinions?

Hurlers fall short against Dublin.

As a man who would be more enclined to follow the football, I travelled to Tullamore last night with an open mind. Sure, I’d go out and support the hurlers when ever I could but after last night I wonder when will I return again.

The ground in Tullamore is a fine tidy stadium at the edge of the town and its a credit to all the people who made that redevelopment possible a few years back. A sizeable crowd in the region of about 12,000 I imagine made their way to the ground, alot of them donning the maroon jersey (something I don’t see often with the footballers now a days).

I dont want to go into the details of the game as I am sure you will get it else where but Galway where poor. I couldn’t see much fight out there bar a few players. The backs played well I thought, Collins and Kavanagh really stood out for me. Some of the puck outs from Skehill (had a fine game by the way) where questionable and lacked any real prereheared plan. Dublin had it well sussed though, they dropped deep during a Galway puck out, picking up any of the 50-50s.

In the forward line, the game bypassed them all bar Joe Gantley where he tried, God love him, he tried. He got a goal and kept running at the defence but he couldn’t do alone. The boys around him didn’t respond to his enthusiasm. I would question starting Damien Hayes also, he didn’t seem up for it in terms of fitness as we all know how he has suffered with injuries the past year.

I thought when Dublin went down to 14 men with about 10 minutes to go and when we got the goal, I thought we would push on and narrow the margin, but to Dublin’s credit they stood strong and seen out the game strongly.

I don’t know where this leaves hurling in Galway, as it was already in a fragile state. I still think there is a championship performance in this team, this year, I just wonder when will it come. Starting off last night at odds of 8/1 to win the all Ireland, they have now faded to 28/1 and that’s saying something.

Time for the players to take some accountability, everything is put in place (even if some of the managers decisions are questionable), it’s just a matter of the players coping on a bit and start showing some passion in that maroon jersey. Without that foundation, the whole lot will crumble and that showed last night.

All in all though,

GAILLIMH ABÚ!

Looking ahead to Mayo

So we have been hit with the news this week that Armstrong is now definitely out for the game against Mayo next Sunday, it’s a big loss as we now may well have to contend with Michael Meehan not winning his race to be fit on time for next Sunday also.

So who will step in and take Armstrongs place, well we can’t look beyond Mark Hehir after his exceptional form at u21 level. Perhaps, in Meehans absence it will give other players the chance to finally step up. The vital influence of Joyce cannot be underestimated to this very day and his availability is no doubt a boost to Galways cause.

It seemed when Joyce returned to the fold against Armagh in the league, it reinvigorated the Galway outfit that day and a commendable victory was the result. But we cannot hold onto him for much longer as when he steps down (sooner rather than later), what ever will happen to the county teams confidence? Id rather not even think of it.. (a bit dramatic, I know)

Meanwhile on the club front, Michael Breathnach have been thrown out of the club championship due to Mountbellew launching an objective against their club championship result in which Breathnachs fielded a uneligable player. Im sure its not the last we will hear of it, but the Gaeltacht outfit are considering their next move.

Perhaps they will boycott their players from playing football with the county? Who knows what might happen, but I know for a fact its not the end of it.

So that’s it for another day, only a week to go now til the big throw in and we must be the last team in the country to get their championship campaign underway.

Also best wishes to the hurlers tomorrow against Dublin in the Leinster semi final..

  • Annaghdown V Mountbellew -Moylough 6-45 Tuam Stadium Referee ;Frank Kinneen
Killererin start the defense of their title in Tuam Stadium against St. Michaels, one can’t look beyond the defending champions tonight and I look forward to seeing wheter Tommy Joyce will don the red jersey once again!
Some interesting fixtures but I would say Moycullen and Bearna is tie of the round, Bearna exceeded expectation last year and made it to the semi final. It is worth noting also, from Annaghdown team against Bearna in the quarter final last year, six of them players have gone to Oz. I can see them struggle and may well be contenders for relegation, remember its through the championship that teams get relegated this year and not through the league format.. Interesting!

Back after an overall encouraging Spring

Well I have been absent for a good while now, ever since the league had started and this is due to a number of issues, circulating mainly with work and family. Its fair to say by Galway football standards it has been an interesting last few months and I would like to share some opinions with you all.

First of all, a word has to go out to our Under 21′s who have been crowned All Ireland champions for the first time since 2005. I must say I was over the moon as it gave us the lift we so badly needed before the championship. Its fair to say, even this team came in under the radar and they proved a lot of doubters wrong with four quality performances which ended with that illusive All Ireland title on the 1st of May.

The signals where there as they disposed of Sligo on the 1st round, and lets be honest it was a rout. Scoring 2-20 away from home in a Championship game no matter the opposition is something worth noting and the fine form continued in the Connacht final after easily dismantling the much hyped and current champions Roscommon in Pearse Stadium.

Cork where next to conquer and I must say I feared for the worst on the way down to Ennis, even though all the signs where there that Galway where a good outfit, it would be tested to the limits against a rampant Cork who hammered Kerry out the gate in their provincial final. I should have known it, Galway rose to the challenge and no doubt the game turned was when Michael Boyle got that all important goal to see Galway in by 2. It was a lift that everyone in the county needed, Cork where branded as one the best underage Cork teams in their history.. the hype got to them.

And then the holy grail of the All Ireland final against Cavan. Over 10 thousand blues made it to Dublin but they where disposed of easily and Galway never looked like losing. It was a massive performance for all involved, one of the proudest days since 1998 in terms of it was a title we really really needed due to our seniors being seen as being in massive decline.

Many players stood out throughout the campaign and Tomas O’ has reacted in accordance by promoting a dozen of them to the senior ranks! Alot of players come to mind, Colin Forde at full back was at his very best and a very worthy All Ireland winning captain. Tomas Fahy, Josh Moore and Johnny Duane also impressed in the half back line. Defensively the Galway seniors have been poor and maybe these guys if they keep improving can start pushing for places soon.

Fresh out of minor and straight into midfield for the u21′s, Tomas Flynn of Athenry and Fintan Curran, what exciting talents these guys are. 19 years old and dominating matches in midfield for Galway, it really is something fresh and both the lads have been training with the senior squad as far as my sources know. Moving onto the half forward line, Mark Herhir has been a revelation, fresh into intercounty football and he has been hailed as the future of the Galway forward line. Hard to disagree, he leads from the front and can score fine scores. Lets not forget Michael Boyle, Eric Monaghan and Mr. Speedy Gonzalez himself, Danny Cummins. They also, have been invited to join the senior team with a view of staking a place in the championship squad.

The future definitely looks rosy once again but its just a matter of bringing the guys through and I hope this can happen, as it hasn’t so so many times in the past.

Moving onto senior affairs.. Well what a mixed campaign it has been, in fairness we deserved to walk the plank and take the drop. Overall we haven’t played well, although coming towards the end of the campaign we salvaged some pride by drawing with Dublin and scoring a fantastic win away to Armagh, we haven’t been up to scratch.

The game against Mayo in Tuam is the one that is still vivid in my mind, what a disaster!. They walked through us with ease and I wondered where was the passion and what would Tomas do from here. Losing the opening game to Monaghan was always going to make it difficult, but with no passion, we will be nothing. As time went on the performances improved and that is something worth taking into consideration as the championship beckons.

What will Tomas do, who will he draft into the team from the u21′s? Is it too early for some of them? What will happen at midfield? Will Finian Hanley wait there or will he move back to his prime position at full back? Can Tomas Flynn or Fintan Curran make another massive step up to senior football?

So many questions and so many answers to be found. Mayo in Castlebar will be judgement day.

Just a word on the minors, during the Connacht league they scored wins against Leitrim and Longford, drew with Sligo and lost to Mayo and Roscommon. Not very encouraging but I hear where missing many of the Jarlaths contingent who were unlucky to lose the Hogan Cup final in April by a point against St. Colemans Newry.

So we may be relegated in senior but I would have taken it if I was told our u21′s would have an All Ireland in their back pocket so I cannot complain too much!

Mick.

National Football League 2011 – My Predictions

MY PREDICTION

6 was the magic number in points last year to stay in Division, with 4 points being the very minimum with that total coming down to score difference. Suggesting of the quality teams thats in Division 1 this year (more so than last year in my opinion) it will be tight at the bottom. Here bellow is where I see the final league standings shaping up.

Bold means win for team||Italic means draw

Round 1
Armagh V Dublin
Mayo V Down
Kerry V Cork
Monaghan V Galway

Round 2
Down V Galway
Dublin V Cork
Mayo V Kerry
Armagh V Monaghan

Round 3
Down v Armagh
Dublin V Kerry
Cork V Monaghan
Galway V Mayo (Big Call)

Round 4
Cork V Down
Mayo V Armagh
Monaghan V Dublin
Kerry V Galway

Round 5
Down V Monaghan
Galway V Cork
Armagh V Kerry
Dublin V Mayo

Round 6
Dublin V Down
Monaghan V Kerry (A spirited comeback from Monaghan (playing for pride))
Mayo V Cork
Armagh V Galway

Round 7
Monaghan V Mayo
Kerry V Down
Galway V Dublin
Cork V Armagh

Team Pld W D L Scr Agn Dif Pts
Kerry 7 5 1 1 N/A N/A N/A 11
Dublin 7 5 0 2 N/A N/A N/A 10
Cork 7 4 1 2 N/A N/A N/A 9
Mayo 7 4 0 3 N/A N/A N/A 8
Galway 7 3 0 4 N/A N/A N/A 6
Armagh 7 2 1 4 N/A N/A N/A 5
Down 7 2 1 4 N/A N/A N/A 5
Monaghan 7 1 0 6 N/A N/A N/A 2

Well they are my predictions, some in your opinion are probably miles off (but I had to give Monaghan a win in there somewhere, and maybe a home game against Kerry will give them a lift). The reason in which I dont see Monagahan doing well is the fact that they are down a lot of regulars and their build up to the NFL has been far from ideal (losing all games in the McKenna Cup).

From my predictions it says that Dublin and Kerry will contest the league final, it looks about right to me. Reason im giving Dublin the edge is due to the fact of their numerous home games against the better teams, (home games for Dublin, bare in mind, is Croke Park). From that it looks like Armagh, Down or Monaghan to be relegated but Galway, I feel will be in the mix too (I hope im proven wrong). I have no score difference filled in for obvious reasons but it will be interesting to see how my predictions pan out!

So it begins on Sunday with the 1st round of matches and best of luck to the Tribesmen and I hope we do enough to stay up!

All the best!

Galway team for Sunday. NFL Opener!

Iniskeen is the venue for Sunday fixture and Galway are far from full strength (bear in mind, either are Monaghan, who, as it turns out are missing more 1st choice that Galway). Galway have to go about the fixture without regulars such as PJ, Meehan and Concannon. Also this weekend Galway will have to plan without Paul Conroy (who is on club duity, as is Concannon), Niall Coleman hasnt pulled through injury on time to stake his place and Fiachra Breathnach also misses out. The team bellow :

1 Adrian Faherty Claregalway
2 Kieran Fitzgerald Corofin
3 Finian Hanley Salthill-Knocknacarra
4 Kieran McGrath Corofin
5 Gary O’Donnell Tuam Stars
6 Niall Coyne Carna Caiseal
7 Alan Burke Corofin
8 Garreth Bradshaw Maigh Cuilinn
9 Eddie Hoare St Michaels
10 Joe Bergin Mountbellew-Moylough
11 Cormac Bane Caherlistrane
12 Gary Sice Corofin
13 Matthew Clancy Oughterard
14 Cillín De Paor An Ceathrú Rua
15 Sean Armstrong Salthill-Knocknacarra

Looking at the team, I would have to wonder where has Nicky Joyce wandered off to, reports suggest he is not playing inter-county football this season, if true, it is a big blow for an already bewildered Galway forward line. In midfield a new, untested partnership of Eddie Hoare and Gareth Bradshaw comes into effect and it will be interesting to see how they come out in this fixture. Sean Armstrong starting inside the 21′ will be good news for Galway followers as his performance against Sligo in there was fairly good, heres for hoping much of the same on Sunday!

Its vital thats Galway pick up their 1st points of League on Sunday as it would be fair to say, the loser will face the huge task of waiting in Division 1 for another season, already!. With a fixture away to Down right after, Galway will be up against it this year. An away trip to the Kingdom is also on the cards but home games against, Dublin, Cork and Mayo will hopefully appeal to the Galway follower. Its vital that Galway pick up as much at home as possible. I will tomorrow share my predictions with you for the national league!

All the best lads.

Aer Arann logo still landed

The recession has hit again, and this time the county board has to bear the brunt of it. The problem being, we have sponsorless football inter-county teams. Seeing as there has been no up-take in the sponsorship, Aer Arann will remain on the shirt, despite the fact they terminated sponsorship late last year. It brought an end to a two-year partnership, falling short the four years promised. So now for the national league we have, a sponsorless team wearing Aer Arann jerseys for good measure.. Without doubt, a sign of the times.
